The Polocrosse Association of South Africa (PASA) welcomes riders, families, and horse lovers of all ages and abilities to experience one of the most exciting and inclusive equestrian sports in the country.
Our clubs are spread across South Africa in the following provinces: KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, North West, Eastern Province, Western Province, Limpopo, and Gauteng. Wherever you are, there’s likely a friendly club ready to help you get started.
Polocrosse is an affordable, family-friendly sport where community, sportsmanship, and fun are at the heart of everything we do. PASA supports riders at every level, from complete beginners to international competitors. Regular international tours are held for the Open division as well as Veterans, Seniors, Intermediate, U19, U16, and U14 age groups. Younger players are not held back by age: if they are good enough, they are old enough! Women and men enjoy equal opportunities to represent their provinces and their country.
Each season, clubs host a variety of tournaments that cater for all levels, creating a welcoming and social environment both on and off the field. Every province holds a provincial tournament, and from these events teams are selected to represent their provinces at the annual Interprovincial Tournament, hosted at a different venue each year. At the end of the season, all clubs are invited to compete in the prestigious South African Championship. Teams are grouped into divisions so that everyone can compete at a suitable level. Each player has a handicap, and the combined team handicap determines which division they play in, ensuring fair and enjoyable competition.
Our national handicap committee meets three times a year to review every player’s handicap and adjust it where necessary according to their level of play. This ensures that new and developing players are not thrown in at the deep end and can progress at a pace that builds confidence and skills. Very young children can start in the Pee Wee division, where they may be led or simply trot around at their own pace, making it a safe and gentle introduction to the sport. The entry-level handicap is -2 and the top handicap is 10, giving plenty of room to grow.
PASA offers a strong, supportive coaching structure, from the Director of Coaching and Chief Coach to provincial and nominated club coaches. Coaching is available to any player who requests it, and there is no fee for the coaching itself. Players may only be asked to contribute towards venue costs and catering for weekend events. Our national teams also benefit from specialised support such as sports psychologists, eye training, and fitness assessments—expertise that filters down into the broader playing community.
Polocrosse is one of the more affordable equestrian options. You only need one horse to play, and polocrosse horses are generally well priced compared to those used in many other disciplines. Most players ride thoroughbreds off the track, and with two Australian Stock Horse stallions imported into South Africa in the past decade, their progeny are now also available and well suited to the sport.
PASA is a member of SAEF and SASCOC and proudly supports SANESA, reinforcing our commitment to structured, safe, and enjoyable youth and adult participation.
If you’re looking for a fun, fast-paced, and friendly equestrian sport where you and your horse can grow, learn, and belong, polocrosse could be the perfect fit.
New players and members are always welcome—visit your nearest club, meet the community, and give polocrosse a try.
